Still in dark over nomination for presidential candidate: Mukherjee

May 7, 2012 - Dhaka

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has denied having any knowledge about reports of his name being proposed in the ensuing presidential polls.

"I can't make any comment on it, because I do not know. In our decision making system unless a decision is taken, nobody shares the decision officially, so I am in as dark as many like you," Mukherjee told media.

Mukherjee is on a two-day official visit to Bangladesh to take part in festivities marking the 150th birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

There have been reports that the Congress has been trying to reach out to its allies to have a consensus on Vice President Hamid Ansari or Pranab Mukherjee for the prestigious post.

According to certain media reports, Mukherjee appears to be emerging as a front-runner in the race for the president's post within his party and outside with allies and some others backing him.

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil's term ends on July 25 this year. She has been president since July 25, 2007.

The president is the constitutional head of the country and the supreme commander of the armed forces. By Mrityunjay Singh
