Parts of Texas devastated by tornadoes.

Parts of Texas, including state capital Dallas have been devastated by tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service, the tornadoes hit Dallas at noon and then moved eastwards.

The Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, one of the busiest airports worldwide, was forced to cancel hundreds of flights due to the calamity.

"Obviously we're going to have a lot of assessments to make when this is done," the BBC quoted Dallas County spokeswoman, Maria Arita, as saying.

Large scale damage has been reported of properties and the environment in the tornado struck cities such as Kennedale, Arlington and Lancaster.

Witnesses said the twisters formed quickly.

There were also reports of power cuts in thousands of homes. Police told residents to keep away from loose power lines.

The affected areas will be under inspection for further tornadoes till Tuesday.
