Kiwi PM joins Obama in supporting gay marriage

May 12, 2012 - Wellington

The prime minister of New Zealand John Key has joined US President Barack Obama in supporting same-sex marriage.

Key issued a statement supporting gay rights after Obama said in a television interview that he believed gay couples should be allowed to marry, The Age reports.

Key said that he did not have any personal objection to gay marriage, however, adding that the change was not on his government's agenda.

New Zealand currently allows same-sex civil unions, but there is a push for marriage equality.

However, both Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott oppose gay marriage.

Australian Marriage Equality spokesman Rodney Croome said that Australia was the only developed, English-speaking democracy in which the leaders of both major parties opposed gay marriage.
