Iowa Governor Terry Branstad briefly hospitalized after choking

July 4, 2012 - Los Angeles

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad was briefly hospitalized in Los Angeles after choking on food. According to the Governor's spokesman, the incident happened in a ceremony for the re-dedication of the USS Iowa battleship.

Branstad, 65, traveled with his wife to the event for the USS Iowa, a World War II warship being turned into a floating museum at the Port of Los Angeles. He choked on a carrot during the event and vomited. He was taken to a nearby hospital out of caution and went through a series of tests. He was discharged when the tests didn't reveal anything serious. His spokesman Tim Albrecht said that the Governor is fine now and is in great spirits.

Terry Branstad was the Governor of Iowa from 1982 to 1998 and was elected for a fifth term in 2010.
