Aung San Suu Kyi makes her first Parliament speech

July 25, 2012 - Naypyidaw

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi made her first speech in Parliament today. In her speech, the Nobel Peace Prize winner called for laws protecting the rights of the country's ethnic minorities. Suu Kyi won a historic by-election in April and won her first seat in the Myanmar's Parliament.

"Based on the spirit of equality, mutual respect and understanding, I would like to urge all lawmakers to enact necessary laws or amend laws to protect the rights of ethnic nationalities. The high poverty rates in ethnic states clearly indicate that development in ethnic regions is not satisfactory - and ethnic conflicts in these regions have not ceased," Suu Kyi said during her brief speech.
