Ashraf not good choice for Pakistan PM, says Asma Jahangir

June 26, 2012 - Lahore

Former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Asma Jahangir has said Raja Pervez Ashraf was not a good choice for the Pakistan prime minister's post.

Jahangir said Ashraf should not have been elected chief executive of the country as he was accused of financial corruption in rental power projects, reports the Daily Times.

Pakistan Peoples Party's (PPP) Ashraf was elected as the twenty-fifth Prime Minister of Pakistan on Friday, after the 342-member National Assembly voted him with 211 votes over the PML-N nominee Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan Abbasi, who managed 89 votes.

Ashraf's appointment as the premier came after the Supreme Court sacked Yousuf Raza Gilani from the Prime Minister's office.

Gilani was convicted of contempt for refusing to reopen Swiss corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
