October 27, 2011 - Melbourne

The world's biggest, heaviest and inherently most valuable gold coin, worth just under 54 million dollars, was unveiled by Perth Mint today.

According to the Herald Sun, weighing in at 1,012 kilograms, the coin is more than one tonne of 99.99 percent pure gold.

It features a bounding red kangaroo on one side, and the Queen's motif on the other.

"The giant coin is a magnificent Australian icon symbolising one of the Mint's most extraordinary accomplishments in its 112-year history," a statement on Perth Mint's website said.
