Women becoming dull with 'celebrity culture of empty-headed narcissism'

June 16, 2011 - London

Experts have revealed that celebrity culture is making educated women as dull as the Z-list celebrities they mock at.

High-flying American lawyer Lisa Bloom, in her book 'Think: Straight Talk for Women to Stay Smart in a Dumbed-Down World', said that reading 'Heat' and watching shows such as 'The X Factor' or 'Big Brother' is creating a generation of dull and dim-witted women.

According to her, women have 'veered off track into a culture of empty-headed narcissism'.

She cited a survey that suggests that despite girls now routinely outperforming boys throughout school, a quarter of young women would rather prefer winning a TV beauty contest than the Nobel Peace Prize.

"We have a problem. The generation before us fought like hell and won for us equality in education and employment. Let's use that for a higher purpose than sending pictures of kittens on Facebook," the Daily Mail quoted her as saying.

Miss Bloom has argued in her book that there is a 'mirror effect' when we continually digest trash, provided by TV and magazines.

"We become almost as bad as the egomaniacs, drunken starlets, and arrogant attention-seekers we read about," she added.

British relationship expert Francine Kaye also believed that focusing on celebrity culture has been making women dumb themselves - as being 'hot' is seen as the ultimate goal.

"Women are bombarded daily in every magazine with celebrity gossip and we cannot get away from it," she said.

"Some very intelligent younger women are dumbing down to appear hotter and cuter and putting their looks and image above their brains - the reason being because 'hot' is seen to be desirable," she added.
