US won't give Pak military aid without change: Clinton

June 24, 2011 - Washington

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on

Thursday said that Washington is not prepared to continue the same

levels of military aid to Pakistan unless it sees some changes in the

relationship.

"When it comes to our military aid, we are not prepared to continue providing that at the pace we were providing it unless and until we see some steps taken," Clinton told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

She, however, didn't specify the steps, but stressed it was time for the United States and Pakistan to ensure their interests and actions are aligned.

The Daily Times also quoted Clinton, as saying that Washington did not believe the top levels of the Pakistani government knew that Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden had been hiding in Abbottabad before he was killed by US forces there last month.

The United States has been giving Pakistan about three billion dollars in aid annually in recent years, much of it for the military.
