US Navy seals shot Osama as he lunged to grab guns

May 6, 2011 - London

US Navy Seal team fired at Al Qaeda chief Osam bin Laden after he went to grab two guns-an AK-47 assault rifle and a Makarov handgun-in his bedroom, according to American officials.

US officials have already said that bin Laden was unarmed when he was shot dead during Sunday's mission, but information about the weapons now sheds new light over why the assault team decided to kill Bin Laden rather than try to capture him alive.

US Congressman Jim Langevin said: "He was not armed, the administration has confirmed that, but there were weapons in the room."

Another congressman, who asked not to be named, said the weapons find had increased the Seal unit's fears that bin Laden would not surrender peacefully, The Sun reports.

Slamming critics who questioned why unarmed bin Laden was shot dead, a US official said: "Our Special Forces weren't raiding a girl scout troop looking for overdue library books. They were on a kill mission for Osama bin Laden."

The US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said details of what happened were clearer now that the assault team had undergone a debriefing.
