US Congress must be sensitive to views of Pakistanis for long-term ties: Gilani

June 8, 2011 - Islamabad

The US administration, and particularly US Congress, must to be sensitive to the opinions and views of the people of Pakistan, as this is the only way to forge a long-term strategic partnership based on mutual trust, respect and interest, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said.

Gilani made these comments while talking to a US Congressional delegation led by Doug Lamborn, which called on him at the PM's House in Islamabad.

The prime minister said that US presence in Pakistan should be seen as a source of peace and prosperity, The News reports.

"The provision of civil nuclear technology, reimbursement of large amounts of withheld Coalition Support Fund to Pakistan and utilisation of Kerry Lugar Bill funds for signature projects that have a direct bearing on the life of ordinary people will help build a positive image of the US in the country," he added.

Gilani also stressed upon the need of positive messaging about each other in both countries, and regretted that certain incidents were blown out of proportion in a negative way about Pakistan in the US, which obviously drew a reaction in Pakistan with a negative impact on bilateral relations.
