Shell says North Sea oil spill is under control

August 14, 2011 - London

Oil giant Shell has said that a leak in a North Sea pipeline is under control.

A leak in a flow line leading to the Gannet Alpha oil platform, 180 kms east of Aberdeen, was found on Wednesday.

The company said that the size of sea surface affected was estimated to be some 31 kms by 4.3 kms at its widest point - it is unclear how much oil has escaped, the BBC reports.

A Shell spokeswoman said that the flowline on the seabed had been isolated and depressurised and the leakage of oil had been "considerably reduced".
