SA investigator in Anni Dewani murder case accused of calling guard "stupid black baboon"

August 12, 2011 - London

A senior South African police officer who had been handling the mysterious murder case of India-origin bride Anni Dewani, has appeared in court after being accused of being both corrupt and racist.

Colonel Christiaan Theron has been accused of racially abused a security guard, calling the latter "a stupid black baboon." He has denied the charges, the Daily Star reports.

Security guard Bulelani Mgcuwe told a Cape Town court: "It reminded me of the apartheid years when white people were still in charge. It was like Colonel Theron has a grudge against black people."

Theron was closely involved in the investigation into the death of 28-year-old Anni, who was murdered in Cape Town during her honeymoon last November.

Earlier, the National Chief of Police Bheki Cele was accused of being racist by referring to Dewani, who has Indian heritage, as "a monkey who came here to kill his wife".

On Wednesday, magistrates ruled that Anni's husband Shrien Dewani can be extradited to face charges that he arranged the killing of his bride during their honeymoon.
