Reality TV show word 'babe' added to Oxford English Dictionary

June 16, 2011 - London

The word 'babe', which became popular by the TV reality show 'The Only Way Is Essex', has made it into the latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary.

Several characters in the popular ITV2 show repeatedly use the word to describe an attractive young man.

OED editor Fiona Macpherson said the words 'babes' and 'babe magnet' had also been recorded in the dictionary for the first time.

"Obviously, we had an entry before for the word 'babe', meaning a child or baby, and it has appeared before as a word referring to a young woman," the Daily Mail quoted Macpherson as saying.

"But this is the first time it has appeared in this way, referring to an attractive young man," she added.

The word is among nearly 2,000 new entries to make it into the latest edition of the dictionary.
