Queen Elizabeth II makes Philip head of the Royal Navy

June 11, 2011 - London

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has awarded her husband Prince Philip a new title as a 90th birthday present.

The Queen, on Friday, honoured the Duke of Edinburgh with the title of the Lord High Admiral of the Navy - a role that, until now, was hers.

The office of the Lord High Admiral dates from the 14th century and has been held by the Queen since 1964, Sky News reports.

Prince Philip had served in the Royal Navy during the World War II.

He had taken part in the Allied landings in Sicily and was in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrendered in 1945.
