Polygamous hubbies behind 'Obedient Wives Club', says Malay minister

June 11, 2011 - Kuala Lumpur

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister' Department Senator Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim has said that polygamous husbands are likely to be behind the formation of the Obedient Wives Club, and that that most women who were members practiced polygamy and many were second wives.

"I suspect this club is managed by their husbands who are sending a wrong message to the masses through their wives about being obedient," the Star online quoted her as saying.

This way, all a husband needs to do is to tell the wife that he wants another wife to avoid committing zina and the wife is obliged to find another wife for him or risk being labelled as disobedient, she said.

"This sort of message could confuse the public," she insisted.

Dr Mashitah further said that the sole purpose of the club was to publicize the Global Ikhwan Group, which is the current incarnation of the banned Al-Arqam group.

She was commenting on recent statements by leaders of the controversial club that social ills such as prostitution, domestic abuse and human trafficking were caused by wives who were not obedient to their husbands and failed to satisfy them sexually like "first-class prostitutes".
