Pak 'not blocking' obscene mobile texts for now

November 22, 2011 - Islamabad

Pakistan has assured that it is not "blocking or filtering" any obscene word in mobile text messages for the time being after an earlier declaration caused outrage among users and campaigners.

Earlier, Pakistan's Telecommunications Authority (PTA) had sent a letter ordering cell phone companies to block text messages containing obscenities.

PTA spokesman Mohammad Younis Khan, however, said that it would consult civil society representatives and mobile phone operators on making a much shorter list of words to be banned, The News reports.

The earlier list contained over 1,500 English and Urdu words that were to be blocked.
