Pak Taliban claim female suicide attack in Peshawar

August 12, 2011 - Asia

The Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for Thursday's female suicide blast and another bomb attack against police to "avenge" military operations in Pakistan's tribal belt.

A teenage woman blew herself up near a police check post on Thursday morning, killing another woman, just hours after six people were killed in a separate bomb attack in Peshawar, The Dawn reports.

Omar Khalid, the head of the Pakistani Taliban in Mohmand district, where Pakistani troops are fighting against insurgents, told a foreign news agency by telephone from an undisclosed location that strategies kept on changing in war, and that using female bombers was part of their new strategy.

He said that the blasts were in reaction to the current military operation in the tribal areas, and threatened to launch further attacks until Pakistani military offensives waged "to appease the United States" come to an end.
