'Oldest light bulb' still shining in US after 110 years!

June 16, 2011 - London

A light bulb in a northern California town has been shining almost continuously for 110 years and has been declared the oldest known working light bulb by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Since 1901, the 60-watt bulb has been in use in a fire station, in Livermore, northern California.

It has been shining continuously with only a few exceptions - a brief period in 1903, a week in 1937, and some power outages between then and 1976.

The scientists have been clueless on how it has continued to glow for so long.

"Nobody knows how it's possible. It is a 60 watt bulb and it's only turned on for about four watts but nobody knows why it keeps burning," the Sun quoted Lynn Owens, the chairman of the town's lightbulb centennial committee, as saying.
