Nawaz describes Shahzad's murder as 'assassination of journalism'

June 16, 2011 - Islamabad

Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) chief Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has described the murder of Syed Salim Shahzad, the bureau chief of online portal Asia Times Online, as an assassination of journalism and of Pakistan.

Addressing journalists, who were protesting outside Parliament, Sharif said the government should not conceal facts.

"What are the elements in front of whom the law, Constitution and people appear helpless? Who is it that endorses oppression rather than the oppressed? Who are the people not allowing the formation of independent commission?" Geo News quoted Sharif, as asking.

He called upon both lawyers and members of civil society to stand by journalists in their struggle against tyranny.

Sahrif said the door of the law would continue to be knocked till justice is delivered.

The government should wake up soon, because 'the nation is no longer ready to put up with more atrocities'.
