Mubarak and family under house arrest: Egypt military

March 29, 2011 - Cairo

Former Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak and his family are under house arrest in Egypt, said the country's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

The Telegraph qouted, Egypt's prosecutor general as denying media reports of Mubarak going to Saudi Arabia to receive medical treatment for cancer, insisting that he was at the family retreat in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

"There is no truth to reports that former president Hosni Mubarak has left Egypt for Tabuk in Saudi Arabia", "He is under house arrest, with his family, in Egypt," the country's military rulers said in a statement on Facebook.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces has ruled Egypt since Mubarak was forced to quit in February this year after 18 days of massive street protests against his 30-year autocratic regime.

The council has announced it will hold a general election in September. It said emergency laws would be lifted before the elections.
