Indian delegation meets Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa

Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao, who is leading a high-level delegation to Colombo, met Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Saturday morning.

Nirupama Rao, who is accompanied by National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon and Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar, held talks with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister G L Peiris and Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa on the entire gamut of bilateral ties on Friday.

The Indian delegation also held broad-ranging discussions with Sri Lankan officials on outstanding issues, including the progress in rehabilitation of Tamils in the Northern Province.

Shivshankar Menon called on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in Chennai ahead of the visit and is understood to have apprised her on the Central Government's action on mitigating sufferings of Sri Lankan Tamils.

The Indian delegation's visit to the island nation follows the passing of a unanimous resolution by the Tamil Nadu State Assembly on Wednesday demanding imposition of economic sanctions against Sri Lanka.
