Immigration to swell UK population to 70 mln by 2027: Report

October 27, 2011 - London

Britain's total population is likely to reach a 70million by 2027 because of immigration, a report has revealed.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), two thirds of the rise will be due to foreigners moving into the country and having kids, the Sun reports.

By 2036 the trend will see 73.2 million people will be living in Britain. While by 2043 it will be 74.4 million, overtaking Germany as the most populated country in Europe, the report said.

The average age will rise from 39.7 years in 2010 to 42.2 years in 2035, the report said.

Over the same period, the number of people aged 85 and over will more than double from 1.4 million to 3.5 million. And the number of centenarians will soar from 13,000 to 110,000, the report said.

The ONS assumed annual net migration would be 200,000, that is 20,000 more a year than previous projections.
