Gilani opts for India cricket diplomacy visit over London trip for son's surgery

March 29, 2011 - Islamabad

Pakistan Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has given preference to visiting India to watch Wednesday's Indo-Pak World Cup semi-final in Mohali on the invitation of his Indian counterpart Dr Manmohan Singh, over dashing to London for being present during his son's liver surgery.

The surgery is likely to be carried out on Tuesday (today) since Haider Gilani, the prime minister's son, is on drug therapy and doctors cannot prolong the process.

The biopsy tests and abdominal ultrasound have revealed the presence of cyst in the liver of Haider, who got married about four months ago.

The team of surgeons indicated earlier that the procedure could be performed on Tuesday if all the relevant tests get completed before that.

Gilani had made preparations for rushing to London for being present during the surgery, but following Dr Singh's invitation, he opted to go to India as part of his national duty, sacrificing parental affection.

Sources told The News that Gilani will travel to Chandigarh by a special plane, and an Indian Air Force (IAF) chopper will take him to Mohali on Wednesday morning.

Gilani could proceed to London on a private visit immediately after returning to Islamabad on Wednesday evening after the match gets over, the sources added.
