Foreign firms to offer online mapping services in China only through joint ventures

Foreign companies are forbidden to offer online mapping services in China, and the only way to provide these services is to set up joint ventures, according to a new regulation.

According to a notice issued by the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, setting up joint ventures is the only permissible way for overseas organizations and individuals to provide Internet mapping services in China, Xinhua reports.

This regulation has been in effect since April 27, 2011.

The regulation also stated that, for joint ventures with Internet mapping as their sole business, investment by foreign investors should be limited to no more than 50 percent of the total investment.
