'Bush skipped Obama's Ground Zero invitation to stay out of spotlight'

May 6, 2011 - Washington

Former US First Lady Laura Bush has said her husband George W. Bush turned down President Barack Obama's invitation to visit Ground Zero on Thursday because he wants to maintain a low profile and stay out of politics.

Bush "thinks that's for President Obama to do at this point," the New York Daily News quoted Laura Bush, as saying.

Laura Bush revealed she and her husband were out for dinner when they were notified, but he went back home to reply to Obama's message on bin-Laden being killed.

Bush's spokesman David Sherzer also said Bush "appreciated the invite, but has chosen in his post presidency to remain largely out of the spotlight."

Obama paid tribute to the victims of 9/11 terror attacks by laying wreath at the site of the collapsed World Trade Center on Thursday, just days after Osama bin-Laden was gunned down by U.S. by Navy Seals.
