Brit man goes to court in the coat he stole!

June 24, 2011 - London

It has emerged that a British man, who was accused of shoplifting a coat from a sports store, appeared in the court wearing the very same item.

Stephen Kirkbride arrived in front of the judge wearing the 125-pounds Craghopper waterproof, which he was accused of stealing.

Staffs who were called to give evidence for the prosecution had alerted police after they recognized the coat as the one he had stolen from the town's Sports Direct shop when he left it on a chair in the court.

"I pointed the jacket out to the police officer and he seized it straight away," the Daily Mail quoted Deborah Robson, Store manager, as saying.

The 46-year-old offender was then ordered to surrender the coat when he appeared at South Lakeland Magistrates' Court, Kendal.

Although Kirkbride's defence solicitor Judith Birkett said that her client "wouldn't be so stupid" as to turn up in stolen goods, but Kendal magistrate, Jenny Farmer has found him guilty of shoplifting.

The hearing was adjourned until July 11 for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and Kirkbride has been remanded on unconditional bail.
