Brit cat Smokey wins Guinness record for loudest purr

May 6, 2011 - London

Its official. Smokey is the world's loudest cat - with a purr as loud as a vacuum cleaner.

Most domestic cats reach 25 decibels but she peaked at 67.7.

That is louder than people chatting (60) and not far from a lawnmower (90) or car horn (110).

Guinness World Records confirmed the 12-year-old moggie's title.

"It's incredible to think a purr can be as loud as a vacuum cleaner!," the Sun quoted a spokeswoman as saying.

Owner Ruth Adams, of Pitsford, Northants, said: "We originally started a purring competition to promote the Cats Protection charity. Smokey and I are very excited at being awarded the world record."
