Bachmann clarifies what being 'submissive' to her husband means

August 12, 2011 - Washington

Minnesota Republican congresswoman Michele Bachmann has issued a clarification about what she meant when she said "it was important for wives to be submissive," saying it means 'respect' to her and her husband.

Bachmann had earlier said that 'she'd become a tax attorney because her husband urged her to, and it was important for wives to be 'submissive'.

During her Iowa campaign speech, she was asked whether she "would be submissive to her husband as president".

Bachmann said: "Marcus and I will have been married for 33 years this September 10th," and being submissive "means respect."

"I respect my husband. And he respects me as his wife. That's how we operate our marriage. We respect each other. We love each other," Politico quoted her, as saying.
