NY Rep Maloney too busy to debate with Indian American challenger

Nine time New York Representative Carolyn B. Maloney is reported to be ignoring invites to have a debate with first-time Indian American challenger and Democratic congressional hopeful Reshma Saujani.

New York, Aug.2 : Nine time New York Representative Carolyn B. Maloney is reported to be ignoring invites to have a debate with first-time Indian American challenger and Democratic congressional hopeful Reshma Saujani.

Saujani is an Indian-American lawyer and politician who is running in the Democratic primary for the U.S. House of Representatives in New York's 14th congressional district against incumbent Maloney.

Saujani is of Gujarati, Indian origin. Her parents lived in Uganda, prior to being expelled, along with other Indians, in the early 1970s by then dictator Idi Amin.

The Saujanis are now settled in Chicago.

According to the New York Post, Saujani attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she graduated in 1997 with majors in Political Science and Speech Communications.

She attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where she received a Masters of Public Policy in 1999, and Yale Law School, where she received her Juris Doctorate in 2002.

According to the paper, Maloney, 64, won't respond to a series of invites to debate Saujani, 34.

"Perhaps, because she does not want to discuss her questionable fund raising and possible ethics violations during the recent financial-reform negotiations," Saujani's spokesperson told the NYP.

But Maloney's camp said the congresswoman's too busy in DC working on the economy to face off with Saujani, who is adored by New York financiers for her pro-Wall Street stance.
