GCT Semiconductor's USB Dongle Wins WiMAX Live Low Power Chipset Shootout at WiMAX World 2008

Chicago, United States

GCT Semiconductor, a leading supplier of Mobile WiMAX(TM) solutions to the global market, announced that one of its single-chip WiMAX solutions, GDM7205, won the WiMAX Live Low Power Chipset Shootout at WiMAX World 2008 in the USB dongle category. All leading WiMAX chipset suppliers were invited to participate in the Live Shootout Session to demonstrate how their solution's power consumption translates into handheld battery powered system on-time.

Unlike other WiMAX solutions in the Shootout, GCT's USB dongle features these key winning benefits:

--Single-chip solution

--Complete on-chip transceiver, MAC and PHY

--No external application processor required

Thus GCT's results, measured live at WiMAX World 2008, represent a true depiction of the power consumption of a complete WiMAX solution. Translated into on-time for a typical handheld smartphone, the GDM7205-enabled WiMAX solution provides more than seven hours of internet usage.

"The moderators of the Shootout were able to demonstrate these impressive results using our commercially available GDM7205 solution," commented Dr. KH Lee, President and CEO of GCT Semiconductor. "Enabling a smartphone to achieve almost an entire workday of WiMAX usage time exceeded expectations, and is the very benefit that our customers get now by designing GCT's single-chip solutions into their WiMAX mobile stations."

"The WiMAX chipset ecosystem has made great progress in the key area of low power consumption," said Haig Sarkissian, Principal Consultant of WiMAX 20/20 and moderator of the Live Shootout. "GCT was the only entry in the Live Shootout that demonstrated a complete single-chip WiMAX solution that includes a transceiver, baseband modem and application processor. Our results show that GDM7205 enables WiMAX systems to offer users more on-time than alternative high speed data communication systems such as HSDPA and EVDO."

GDM7205 implements MIMO and all MAC and PHY features. Based on GCT's industry-proven CMOS radio frequency (RF) technology, this compact solution offers a highly integrated, low-power transceiver which minimizes the number of external RF front-end components. It also includes a Mobile WiMAX baseband with high performance dual-processors and an impressive array of peripherals for connectivity.GDM7205 satisfies the high processing demands of multimedia data processing and wireless connectivity while minimizing power consumption.

GDM7205 is in production and the GDM7205 reference design is WiMAX Forum Certified(TM).
