Kuala Lumpur, May 4 : A Malaysian local Bhangra album may sound weird to many in India, but two brothers in Malaysia have created history by fusing the local Malay flavour with the Indian spice of Bhangra.
The singing siblings Manjit Singh Gill and Sukhjit Singh Gill, also known as Goldkartz, wrote and produced their first Bhangra album called Loaded and made it into the Malaysia Book of Records recently.
The album, which was released in January, was named as the first Malaysian local Bhangra album in the country under the Arts and Entertainment category.
23-year-old Manjit, also known as M-Ji, said that they spent three years in making Loaded.
"Usually Bhangra songs are produced in the United Kingdom and India, but we tried to make something different by writing the lyrics, recording the songs, arranging, mastering and mixing the songs ourselves here," New Straits Times Online quoted him, as saying.
M-Ji, who is an International Islamic University law student, also said that they even flew in Indian artistes to work in the album.
According to his 19-year-old brother, Sukhjit, also known as Surj, Loaded represents an urban Bhangra album that has a mixed combination of hip hop, rap, R and B, reggae, house and trance.
"Loaded brings a new dimension in the Bhangra music industry by using English, Malay, Tamil and, of course, Punjabi lyrics to represent the society of Malaysia," said Surj.
Till date, the album, produced by Mastro Records and distributed by EMI Malaysia, has sold more than 2,000 copies.
Maestro Talent and Management Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Freddie Fernandez, who was at the certificate presentation ceremony, said: "We are planning to market the album in the UK and India."
