At least eighteen rebels of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were killed in fierce battle between the rebel group and Sri Lankan security forces.

Colombo, May 4 : At least eighteen rebels of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were killed in fierce battle between the rebel group and Sri Lankan security forces.

According to Sri Lankan Defence Ministry, the government troops fought with the rebels in the Mannar district on Saturday during which one soldier died, while six troops were wounded.

The LTTE did not immediately make a comment over the Lankan forces claim.

As per an estimate, after the latest fighting, security forces have gunned down around 3,359 rebels since January and at least 246 soldiers have died during the same period.
