PML-Q to toe Musharrafs line while supporting PPPs proposed package

Despite reports of the PML-Q turning away from Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to regain its democratic partys image, the erstwhile ruling party is reportedly all set to exploit its parliamentary strength while toeing the Presidencys line on the proposed constitutional package likely to be introduced by the government in the near future.

Islamabad, May 21 : Despite reports of the PML-Q turning away from Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to regain its 'democratic' party's image, the erstwhile ruling party is reportedly all set to exploit its parliamentary strength while toeing the Presidency's line on the proposed constitutional package likely to be introduced by the government in the near future.

Party sources said that they will be in line with Musharraf. "We are in picture through indirect channels but our line will be that of the President. In the broad parameters, the PML-Q will support a package acceptable to President Musharraf as in the present form as reported in the media, the President will be no more there after its approval," The News quoted a key PML-Q leader as saying.

He added: "Definitely we have a key position in parliament particularly in the Senate; therefore, we will go ahead with our own preferences."

The PML-Q leader said that the party would wait for its formal comment on the proposed package once the PPP comes up with clarity on its own stand as the package still comprises various options, including on the term of the Chief Justice in office.

"We would support the proposed constitutional package only if it is to ensure balance of power between the key stakeholders within the parameters of parliamentary set-up," PML-Q Parliamentary Party Leader in the National Assembly Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat said.

The PML-Q has not received any draft from the PPP or the government, "but our preference will be to ensure balance of power", he said and added "According to our information no package has been finalised by the government and if they are serious they should avoid giving options."

The PML-Q leader firmly said the government realises his party's position in parliament, and "they can ensure approval of the package from the National Assembly with PML-Nís support but are totally unable as far as the Senate is concerned."

"The government would have to come to the PML-Q in case a constitutional package is to be passed from the Upper House of parliament.�The PPP has to choose between Nawaz League and PML-Q on the package," said Hayat.
