Two women who have lived next door to each other in Cambridge for an amazing 72 years are set to clinch a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as Britains longest continuous neighbours.

London, May 21 : Two women who have lived next door to each other in Cambridge for an amazing 72 years are set to clinch a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as Britain's longest continuous neighbours.

Mary Tilley, 94, moved into her housing association home in 1935.

She was joined a year later when now 72-year-old spinster Evelyn Hodge - moved in with her parents as a baby.

"Evelyn is great company. We meet every morning for a natter then have tea together in the afternoon. Often she'll pop round in the evening and we'll watch TV," The Telegraph quoted Tilley, as saying.

More than 40 years ago, they even had the fence between the properties taken down so that they could wave to each other through the windows, and have only five paces to walk to the other's front door.

Hodge said: "We got really close when my parents passed away in 1999. Mrs Tilley's husband died in 1992 so both of us were alone. When you point it out, it is an amazing amount of time to be neighbours, yet the years have flown by.

"We have seen many changes during our lives together as neighbours - but fundamentally our homes are still the same as they were when we both came to live here."

Tilley, who has two children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, added: "I'm blessed to have Evelyn."
