BRIC nations join chorus for Security Council reforms

Making its presence felt in the first ever stand alone Brazil-Russia-China--India (BRIC) meet here, Brazilian Foreign Minister Cellos Amorin said if the Security Council will not start responding in a just and fair manner then nations will start looking for alternatives.

Yeketerinberg, May 16 : Making its presence felt in the first ever stand alone Brazil-Russia-China--India (BRIC) meet here, Brazilian Foreign Minister Cellos Amorin said if the Security Council will not start responding in a just and fair manner then nations will start looking for alternatives.

"If Security Council did not start responding in a just and fair manner nations will start looking for alternatives," said Amorin.

Making a scathing attack on the developed world in general and US in particular Amorin said, "It is the food subsidies given which is the root cause of 'Global Food Shortage'."

Addressing the presspersons after the meeting Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said, "Security Council should also include developing nations both as permanent members and non-permanent members to make it more effective and acceptable.

He further said, "The world is becoming multipolar at least on the economic front.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jeichi also echoed the need to reform the United Nations.

Without making reference to any country China also opposed the use of religion and human rights to interfere in the internal affairs of any country during the first BRIC summit.

Both Russia and China also appreciated India's ambitions to play a greater role in international affairs.

The idea of BRIC meeting was coined by then Russian President Vladimir Putin in the sidelines of the UN General Assembly 2006.

The BRIC nations constitute nearly half of the world's population and more than 26 per cent of the world economy.

Addition of Brazil into the India-Russia-China troika has certainly added more seriousness, credentials and power to the club, which seems to be directly challenging the dominance of NATO and US in the international spectrum. By Naveen Kapoor
