Commonwealth set to readmit Pakistan

The 53-nation Commonwealth is to readmit Pakistan, suspended last year when President Pervez Musharraf declared emergency rule.

London, May 12 : The 53-nation Commonwealth is to readmit Pakistan, suspended last year when President Pervez Musharraf declared emergency rule.

Sources were quoted by a foreign news agency as saying that the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) of nine nations, which deals with violations of the organisation's rules on democracy, was meeting in London on Monday to review that suspension.

The readmission is reportedly being considered in the wake of Islamabad meeting many of the conditions set by the Commonwealth, including the creation of a democratically elected government and Musharraf stepping down as army chief.

The Commonwealth is a grouping of mostly former British colonies with a population of 1.8 billion.
