90 Roman Empire skeletons found in mass grave in Gloucester

Over 90 skeletons have been found in a mass grave in Gloucester, which archaeologists say could be the remains of victims of the Antonine plague, an outbreak of smallpox that swept across the Roman empire between 165 A.D. and 189 A.D.

London, May 1 : Over 90 skeletons have been found in a mass grave in Gloucester, which archaeologists say could be the remains of victims of the Antonine plague, an outbreak of smallpox that swept across the Roman empire between 165 A.D. and 189 A.D.

The site, which was discovered in London Road in 2005, was according to The Times, excavated before retirement homes were built on it.

Louise Loe, of Oxford Archaeology was quoted as saying; "The skeletons of adult males, females and children were lying in a very haphazard fashion. They had been dumped unceremoniously in a hurried manner."
