Lahore, Mar 6 : Taking a strong exception at the recent spurt in violence in Pakistan, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has questioned the present day government's intentions about curbing terrorism in the country.
It said that on the eve of the general election (on February 18), the official spokespersons announced violence-free polling as, according to them, all terrorists had all been rounded up, it questioned if the respite was limited to the election day only.
It also asked what the authorities' version of the cause of the latest spurt in murderous attacks was. "Are the militants trying to extend the life of the regime voted out on February 18, or do they want to damn the new government before it takes charge?" the Daily Times quoted the HRCP statement as saying.
It called upon the regime to demonstrate some capacity to protect people's lives in terrorist attacks instead of merely announcing an alert or red alert after each explosion.
"As usual, the authorities announced a red alert across the country. Such gestures are becoming increasingly meaningless as the terrorists are evidently enjoying freedom of the land," it stated.
The strong worded statement said that the people had a right to know what had been done to trace terrorist-training camps, the routes used for the supply of explosives, and the sources of funds used in terrorist operations.
