Kashmir Singh released from Lahore jail

Kashmir Singh, the Indian who had been languishing in various jails in Pakistan for the past 35 years, was released on Monday from Lahore`s Central jail.

Lahore, Mar 3 : Kashmir Singh, the Indian who had been languishing in various jails in Pakistan for the past 35 years, was released on Monday from Lahore`s Central jail.

He would cross into India and to his home in Punjab on Tuesday, said caretaker Federal Minister for Human Rights Ansar Burney.

Burney told reporters at Lahore's Avari Hotel on Sunday that Kashmir Singh had been arrested in Rawalpindi in 1973, on charges of allegedly spying for Indian agencies.

He said a Pakistan military court had sentenced Kashmir to death while the other Indian, his accomplice, had returned after serving a sentence of 10 years.

During the question-answer session, the minister said he knew of 30 or 40 such cases of Pakistani families who had been suffering because their loved ones were languishing in Indian jails.

Burney said that he had talked to Indian High Commissioner Satyabrata Pal for the release of Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails, whose number was over 500.

Burney said he would be accompanying Kashmir Singh to his home.

"Pakistan has taken the first step as a good will gesture, and we hope that someone in India will also stand up to continue the good work," he added.
