Fatima Bhutto says Western media ignored rigging during Pak general elections

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhuttos niece Fatima Bhutto on Monday said that the western media played irresponsible role while reporting February 18 polling in Pakistan, adding that they had disregarded heavy rigging.

Hong Kong, March 3 : Former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's niece Fatima Bhutto on Monday said that the western media played irresponsible role while reporting February 18 polling in Pakistan, adding that they had disregarded heavy rigging.

"We turned on CNN and we turned on the BBC and we were told, Musharraf has lost, it's a sign for democracy....you've had elections, good job, you've done wonderfully, because the president hasn't won," said Fatima, adding, "But in Pakistan, the situation looked quite different."

"To say there was rigging in the February 18 elections are an understatement.... It wasn't just rigging, it was quite open, unapologetic rigging," the Dawn quoted her, as saying.

Stating that her family connections would deter her from joining politics, Fatima said: "Dynasty has been incredibly bad for Pakistan... You have a country of 165 million people that has three choices, the Bhuttos, the Sharifs or the Musharrafs,"

"To enter (politics) now would be to perpetuate that system," she added.
