Political one up-manship behind PPPs move to release detained Pak judges

Newly sworn in Pakistan Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani ordered the release of deposed chief justice Iftikhar Chowdhary in order to pre-empt other alliance partners taking the credit of the initiative, PPP sources have said.

Islamabad, Mar 28 : Newly sworn in Pakistan Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani ordered the release of deposed chief justice Iftikhar Chowdhary in order to pre-empt other alliance partners taking the credit of the initiative, PPP sources have said.

The order about judges' release was not only pre-planned but also part of the PPP's internal strategy not to let other coalition partners to take credit of the initiative, they said.

"The announcement of release of the judges without giving a single minute to others was to ensure that only PPP takes advantage of such measures, reflecting public sentiments," The News quoted the party sources as saying.

"We will not provide more chances to our coalition partners to gain more popularity on the judges' issue when our party, leading the government, has to face all problems and has to go before the people in future," the party sources further said.

They admitted that the prime minister's prompt order came not to violate governance rules but in realisation of the masses' support to the judges in their release. "Nawaz Sharif and his party have already taken advantage of the judges' issue in their electioneering and we cannot afford more."

An inter-party competition over taking credit prevails amongst two major coalition partners, the PPP and PML-N, as both firmly believe that they have to face each other in the politics, added the paper.

A PPP source said: "Again I would say that Nawaz Sharif and other political forces would exploit the situation if the Gilani government delays announcements involving reinstatement of judges."
