On the eve of the formation of a new democratic government in Pakistan, the countrys President Pervez Musharraf has said that it was he who had laid the foundations for the real democracy in the country.
Islamabad, Mar 24 : On the eve of the formation of a new democratic government in Pakistan, the country's President Pervez Musharraf has said that it was he who had laid the foundations for the real democracy in the country.
"We laid the foundations of real democracy in the past eight years and put Pakistan on the path of progress and development," he said while addressing the Pakistan Day Parade here at the Jinnah Stadium.
The President said that the three-phase programme initiated (by him) eight years ago, had now neared culmination with new governments in place, both at the Centre and the provinces.
He said that an era of real democracy had begun in the country, and expressed hope that the new government would bring political stability and sustain economic development, besides fighting extremism and terrorism.
He expressed the hope that in the next few days, all the governments would be in place and work to put Pakistan on the road to progress and prosperity.
According to The News, on the occasion Musharraf also extended his full support to the new government and hoped that it would maintain the pace of socio-economic development in the country.
The president lauded the Army and said it was not only the guardian of the geographical border of the country, but also protected its people whenever the need arose. He said be it the devastation caused by the earthquake or ravaging floods, or the gigantic task of reconstruction in the most difficult of terrain, or the war on terror, the Army always rose to the occasion.
