Musharraf says he is in touch with Zardari

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said that he is in touch with Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari on matters related to government formation and on the future relationship between the government and the presidency.

Islamabad, Mar.18 : Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said that he is in touch with Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari on matters related to government formation and on the future relationship between the government and the presidency.

According to the Daily Times, Musharraf is said to have conveyed this view to an eight-member delegation of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) that was led by Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and former Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.

PML-Q leaders are said to have briefed the President about their concerns, but Musharraf is said to have assured them that the new government would not trouble them.

Musharraf also told former US Permanent Representative to the UN, Richard Holbrooke, on Monday that the convening of the new parliament should be seen as a "historic moment" in South Asia.

He said he was confident that Pakistan would continue to "progress on the path of democracy and economic growth."

According to a Foreign Office release, Musharraf reiterated Pakistan's resolve to fight terrorism, and called for accelerating work on development initiatives.

Holbrooke agreed on the need for enhanced US support for such initiatives.
