Announcing this, Dr Haneef's lawyer Peter Russo said his client must be compensated for the loss of job due to the false claim by the Australian Government of him being linked to terrorists. Dr Haneef had suffered enormously since the allegations were made against him, the lawyer added.
"How do you restore his reputation after what has been going on? He's lost his job and has to start again. We need somebody to be looking at it with expertise in the area. We are in the process of trying to recover some costs from the Australian government solicitor but it has not really been sorted out and may never be sorted out," the news.com.au quoted Russo as saying.
Dr Haneef, who worked as a registrar at Gold Coast Hospital, was arrested in July last year at Brisbane Airport after his mobile phone SIM card was linked to failed terrorist attacks in Britain. He was held for 12 days before he was charged with recklessly giving support to a terrorist organisation.
Former immigration minister Kevin Andrews had cancelled his visa just hours after a magistrate granted him bail on July 16. This act on the part of the Australian Government had ensured the innocent doctor's incarceration.
The terrorism charge was later dropped as prosecutors admitted to bungling the case and conceded there was insufficient evidence.
The new Federal Labor government this week appointed former New South Wales Supreme Court judge John Clarke QC to head the inquiry into the bungled terrorism case and report by September 30.
