Koirala says will retire from politics after elections

Nepals Prime Minister and Nepali Congress (NC) President Girija Prasad Koirala said on Tuesday that he would retire from politics after the April 10 polls.

Biratnagar (Nepal), Mar.11 : Nepal's Prime Minister and Nepali Congress (NC) President Girija Prasad Koirala said on Tuesday that he would retire from politics after the April 10 polls.

Talking to reporters before boarding a flight to Kathmandu after a four-day stay in his hometown Biratnagar, the octogenarian said he would retire from politics after conducting the Constituent Assembly polls.

He said that he would hand over the leadership of the party to a new generation of politicians.

According to a Kantipur report, Koirala ruled out the possibility of the monarchy or any other force disrupting the polls.

He also informed that an agreement had been reached with New Delhi to strengthen security on the border between the two countries ahead of the elections.

He also mentioned that he would discuss the excesses by the Maoist-affiliated Young Communist League (YCL) with the CPN-Maoist Chairman Prachanda at the earliest after arriving in the capital and warned of possible action against the YCL if their excesses continue.

He said that there would be no talks with the armed agitating groups in Terai because of the impending elections.

However, he mentioned that the government would always remain open to talks if these groups opt for a peaceful resolution to their agitation.

Koirala was in Biratnagar to attend family functions.
