Jeet Bindra, president of Chevron Global Manufacturing, was honored for his career achievements by being named a 2008 recipient of the University of Washington (UW) College of Engineering's prestigious Diamond Award. Bindra, who earned his master's degree in Chemical Engineering from UW, was recognized for Distinguished Achievement in Industry, alongside other esteemed alumni, at a ceremony on May 30 in Seattle.
"Jeet Bindra embodies the attributes of the Distinguished Achievement in Industry Diamond Award," said Matt O'Donnell, Frank & Julie Jungers Dean of Engineering, University of Washington. "He was selected for his outstanding knowledge and significant contributions to the field of engineering as well as his academic and personal accomplishments. We are thrilled to have this opportunity to celebrate Jeet's many achievements and honor him with this award."
"Jeet has made significant contributions to the success of Chevron over the course of a distinguished career, and this award is a testament to his strong leadership and commitment to excellence," said Mike Wirth, executive vice president, Global Downstream. "I congratulate Jeet for this great honor and am pleased to see his alma mater recognize his many achievements and remarkable life's journey."
Breaking Barriers to Success
Early on, Bindra faced a future fraught by hardship and suffering. Raised in a low income family in India, Bindra recognized that education was his ticket out of poverty.
"Growing up as I did in India, I learned the value of hard work and sacrifice," Bindra said. "I believe my success has come through perseverance and values I hold to this day: treat everyone with respect and dignity, always maintain your integrity; work hard; never stop learning; and, most importantly, dream big."
In 1969, he earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. Soon after, Bindra set his sights on immigrating to the United States to pursue a master's degree. He took out a loan for his plane ticket to Seattle, Wash. and arrived at the University of Washington with USD 8 to his name. He earned his master's degree at the university's College of Engineering in 1970.
Bindra joined Chevron in 1977 as a research engineer and for the next 31 years moved up to many leadership positions within Chevron, including president of Chevron Pipe Line Co. and managing director and CEO of Caltex Australia. In 2004, Bindra was named president of Global Refining, which was later changed to Global Manufacturing in January 2008. Among his many successes during his 31-year Chevron career, Bindra lead an effort to negotiate financing, design and construction of a critical pipeline to move crude from the Tengiz field in Kazakhstan to the Black Sea. He was the founding chairman of the board of the South Asian American Leaders of Tomorrow (SAALT), past vice chairman of the Association of Oil Pipe Lines and served on the boards of Caltex Australia Limited and Reliance Petroleum Limited (India). He now serves on the board of directors for GS Caltex.
