Canberra, Jun 23 : Visiting India's External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and his Australian counterpart Stephen Smith have welcomed the diversification and strengthening of political links between the two countries.
Reviewing the bilateral framework dialogue, the two ministers reaffirmed that the two countries were committed to taking bilateral talks to a higher level.
Both countries also underlined a strong bond and enduring shared interests that underpin their growing relationship.
The two ministers also emphasised that regular high-level political contact would continue to underpin bilateral relations.
Mukherjee also said it was too early to refer to the issue of uranium sale as political discussions back home on implementing the Indo-US nuclear deal were still on.
"I have not come here with one issue of getting uranium from Australia. We are aware of the Labour party position on uranium for quite some time. Australia's commitment to non-proliferation is firm and we respect that," Mukherjee added.
Mukherjee also affirmed that India's was fully committed to non-proliferation, and the two countries share a common goal of a nuclear-free world.
During his maiden visit, Mukherjee also welcomed Australia's bid for a non-permanent UNSC seat for the 2013-2014 term.
He noted India would follow Australia's initiatives in appointing an envoy to explore how an Asia-pacific community as suggested recently by Canberra be evolved overtime to respond to the emerging opportunities.
