PSE Completes Roll-out of 2nd Generation gPROMS Modelling Technology

London, United Kingdom

Process Systems Enterprise (PSE), providers of the world-leading gPROMS advanced process modelling (APM) software and related services, completed its roll-out of the 2nd generation gPROMS process modelling platform with the release of gPROMS v3.1.

gPROMS is widely used by large process industry companies in the oil & gas, chemicals, pharmaceutical and similar sectors for accelerating innovation, managing development risk and optimising process design and operation through the application of high-accuracy mathematical models of processes and products.

gPROMS v3.1 is the culmination of many years' development resulting in the staged release of a completely re-architected product, phase 1 of which was released as v3.0 eighteen months ago. In addition to the new architecture v3.1 includes many new usability, modelling and solution techniques that establish it as a leader in all areas.

PSE Managing Director Costas Pantelides says "the leading process industry companies are becoming serious about capturing their considerable IP in mathematical models and systematically using these to accelerate innovation and manage risk. As companies move their IP from legacy code and traditional process flowsheeting environments, they need to know that their investment is secure. We have ensured this with a seamless transition to a completely new generation of software that will remain state-of-the-art for a decade or more."

V3.1 provides significant new functionality for both model users and expert model developers. It provides a comprehensive set of facilities for large-scale graphical flowsheeting, such as multi-layered flowsheets with different layers representing different aspects of the process. It also supports extensive "on-flowsheet" display of results, including user-configurable tables, plots and animations linking, for example, an icon's colour or size to temperature or volume.

gPROMS v3.1 also represents a step-change in solution power, with several important "firsts" in process modelling technology. Extensive internal R&D has resulted in a unique mechanism for obtaining an initial solution to complex models - which can sometimes run to millions of equations - by encapsulating users' experience. New advanced techniques for the solution of multi-dimensional distributed models can reduce solution time for complex models by an order of magnitude.

Prof. Pantelides adds "the completion of the new platform roll-out fulfils our aim of keeping gPROMS right at the forefront of process modelling technology, allowing our users to reap the benefits from the increasingly detailed and accurate models that are required to gain true competitive advantage. It also provides PSE with a rock-solid foundation for implementing further major developments to deliver even more modelling power and usability over the next ten years."
