NC to nominate own presidential candidate

The Nepali congress (NC) on Wednesday concluded that they will nominate their name for the presidential post if the Communist Party of Nepal- Maoist (CPN-M) and the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML) nominated a common candidate for the post.

Kathmandu, July 16 : The Nepali congress (NC) on Wednesday concluded that they will nominate their name for the presidential post if the Communist Party of Nepal- Maoist (CPN-M) and the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML) nominated a common candidate for the post.

The Nepali Congress, who was enraged after the Maoists rejected Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala as Nepal's first president, today took the decision to this effect.

Nepali Congress, the second largest party in the Constituent Assembly (CA), decided to resort to their own approach regarding the presidential candidate and to remain as an opposition party in the future power-equation.

According to Kantipur, a meeting of some of the Nepali Congress central leaders at the PM's official residence in Baluwatar this morning decided to file their candidacy for the presidential post.

The Nepali Congress leaders, who repeatedly discussed the appointment of president with the CPN-M, informed PM Koirala about the consultations.

Earlier, the Nepali Congress had been claiming the post of constitutional president as the second largest party in the CA stating that if the Maoists as the largest party can claim the post of executive Prime Minister.

As the major political parties failed to forge an agreement on posts of president, vice-president and Constituent Assembly chair even after two months after the conduction of the historical CA April 10 poll, the political parties finally decided to put the issues to a vote at the 601 member CA.
